Is Childbirth or Aging Affecting Your Intimacy?
Many women notice that there are subtle changes in intimacy not only after childbirth, but also as they age. As women age, especially as they enter perimenopause and menopause, the vaginal epithelium undergoes not only hormonal changes, but also decreased blood flow changes and structural changes that clearly lead to subtle changes in comfort, sexual function, diminished sensation and orgasms and even urinary changes such stress incontinence and increase in the frequency of urination.
Hormones start to change over time, especially with lower estrogen levels, you start to notice thinning in the walls of the vaginal canal, often called vaginal atrophy. This leads to a decrease in collagen production and elasticity, leading to less comfort, more irritation, more potential for micro tearing during intercourse.
There are also many structural changes that occur post childbirth and as we age. There are changes in the natural folds of the vagina, there’s a slight narrowing and shortening of the vaginal canal for some people, and a weakness in their pelvic floor leading to potential prolapse issues. The changes are often compounded with childbirth.
Women also start to see changes in the labia majora volume with a loss of volume by diminishing fat pads with aging. For many women this leads to the appearance of deflated, wrinkled or hollowness to the labia Majora.
Not only can this be bothersome from an aesthetic point of view but also leads to changes in comfort during intercourse and irritation with wearing tight clothing or exercising. Changes in vaginal lubrication and a slower phase of arousal for lubrication can start to occur. It is common to see changes in the pH balance due to a decreasing concentration of Lactobacillus in the vagina because hormone changes lead to a change and a decrease in the good microbiome that helps support the vagina.
Lastly, women who experience an increase in urinary urgency and frequency, which oftentimes leads to a higher risk of urinary tract infections. Many of our patients have mild to moderate stress incontinence which significantly affects the quality of their lives. Many women complain of mild to moderate stress incontinence, which causes leakage when they laugh, cough, or exercise.
The Hesitation
Although many women would like to change the structural component and improve friction and tightness to their vagina, and restore the normal vaginal anatomy for improved sensation, they fear the downtime and pain of traditional surgery.

Complete Your Rejuvenation with Complimentary Procedures
In our practice we have termed the procedure called the Ultimate Vaginoplasty because it is a hybrid of vaginal tightening surgery to restore weakened or dysfunctional pelvic floor muscles and repairs any defect in the pelvic floor. This dramatically improves tightness, friction and sensation. We combine the vaginal tightening surgery with a vaginal laser since so many (up to 40%) of our patients present with loss of friction and vaginal relaxation along with symptoms of urinary incontinence. By combining these modalities we can correct and restore sensation, friction and quality of life knowing that simple activities like laughing, coughing or exercising will not lead to incontinence.
