Hysterectomy

What To Expect

Dr. David Ghozland discusses the advantages of using robotic surgery as a solution to endometriosis, including a quicker recovery and less pain.

A hysterectomy is a procedure that is performed for a number of reasons. Often it is done to relieve women of the painful symptoms related to:

  • Endometriosis
  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Pelvic pain
  • Adenomyosis
  • Fibroids, which can cause bleeding and pain
  • Uterine prolapse, or when the uterus slides form its normal position
  • Uterine, cervical or ovarian cancers

Dr. Ghozland’s hysterectomy procedures can be done in a variety of ways. Depending on the situation, the uterus may be fully or partially removed. Given the situation and the patients’ age, the ovaries may or may not be removed along with the uterus. This would be reviewed with Dr. Ghozland at the time of your consultation.

  • Supracervical, or partial, hysterectomy — Dr. Ghozland removes the upper part of the uterus; cervix remains.
  • Total hysterectomy — The uterus, cervix, ovaries (one or both) and fallopian tubes are removed.

Dr. Ghozland performs:

  • Laparoscopic hysterectomy — A laparoscope, or thin tube with a lighted camera, and small surgical tools are inserted through a few very small cuts made in the belly. The surgeon performs the hysterectomy from outside the body, viewing the operation on a video screen. This procedure provides tiny incisions and, hence, a quicker recovery and better cosmesis.
  • Scar-less hysterectomy —This robotic procedure allows for slightly better control, increased visibility, HD capability and higher magnification. Only one small cut is made in the belly button. Dr. Ghozland is one of very few surgeons that can perform this procedure.

Both procedures are minimally invasive hysterectomies (requiring general anesthesia) with little blood loss and allow the patient to return home the same day. Patients will be seen again during a one-week and four-week follow-up.

Patients should expect to walk the same day as their procedure, but there may be discomfort, abdominal tenderness and light spotting. Bleeding like a period should be reported immediately to their physician. Daily activities can be resumed in two to three days. Within five to seven days, patients can return work.

Dr. Ghozland and his team are proud to offer women multiple options when a hysterectomy is needed. Most patients will be discharged home the same day and will gain the benefits of a speedy recovery and enhanced cosmetics due to our advanced minimally hysterectomy options.

Hysterectomy Testimonials

  • I contacted Dr Ghozland for an appointment because I was experiencing constant, severe abdominal pain which was getting progressively worse. It began a few months earlier and at first I associated it with excessive exercise. I reduced my exercise and began taking ibuprofen but nothing helped. During my initial visit, we discussed the pain and Dr.Ghozland asked me numerous questions. he gave me a pelvic exam which included a sonogram and prescribed a full pelvic sonogram at Medical Imaging which i did that same day. He did blood test also, On our second visit a few days later he recommended a hysterectomy based on all the results. He further recommended a laporoscopy because of the reduced pain, smaller incisions, and shorter recovery time and gave me a CD describing the procedure. I gave him my okay the next day and scheduled a physical with my GP. The operation was scheduled the flowing Wednesday at the Beverly Hills Surgical Center. From the beginning to the end it was fabulous. I arrived at 9am and was greeted by warm, friendly staff in an immaculate suite of offices. I was the only patient. The nurse who prepped me was extremely calm and reassuring. she answered my questions and stayed until the three doctors arrived. The doctors further discussed the procedure and took note. Then the anesthesiologist began administering the medicine as they wheeled me into another room. The next thing I remember is waking up and it was about 6 hours later. The nurses helped me dress , a family member arrived, she gave me a laundry list of written instructions, and wheeled me to the car. I must have still been drugged since I easily slept through the night. The next morning I immediately got out of bed since I remember her stressing how important it was to be mobile. The pain was manageable and I took one of the lower dosage pain medicine. Both my nurse and Dr.Ghozland called to follow up on me. Each day I felt better and better in fact my boyfriend needed to constantly remind me to slow down. Tuesday morning at 8am I had a follow up visit and was released for work which I went to from his office. I missed a total of 4 days from work and had 3 tiny X shaped scars which have all but disappeared.

  • I had uterine fibroids for many years. My problem was getting worse every year. I was afraid to have the surgery that would help me to correct this situation. Dr.Ghozland explained the whole process to me and I realized there was no reason for being afraid. The surgery was wonderful and in three days I felt perfectly fine. The whole staff at the office is always very nice and polite!

  • A month after my son was born I noticed that the bleeding was getting heavier and I had very large blood clots which I did not after my first c-section. It soon became 12 weeks of non-stop bleeding, blood clots, and cramping. I was in pain and did not feel myself. I became anemic very quickly which was difficult while taking care of a newborn and a toddler. Dr. Ghozland was conservative in his approach. We began with birth control and then added progesterone. Sadly, the bleeding and issues continued. Dr. Ghozland received several calls from me over this time and always responded promptly regardless of the hour. I felt confident in him as always and had complete trust which is very important when it comes to your health. I went in for another doctor visit and began inquiring about a hysterectomy. I was informed that a partial hysterectomy would relieve my symptoms. We discussed the advantages of having a robotic hysterectomy and I was thrilled at the idea of a quick recovery. I was desperate to stop the bleeding and thankful there was a solution. At 33 years old I never anticipated not being able to have any more kids due to the condition of my uterus during the delivery. I was thankful to be blessed with two healthy boys and 100% ready to have the surgery. I found a news clip of Dr. Ghozland online and I was able to hear a women's testimony as well as see the robotic machine that would be used. As always I knew I was in good hands with Dr. Ghozland. I had two small incisions and one in my belly button. The next morning I was up walking around the house. Three days later I was able to enjoy a nice thanksgiving meal with my family which surprised me. By the forth day I was off all pain medication and taking Motrin only. 6 days after the surgery I was back at work teaching where I was on my feet for over four hours. As you can tell, the recovery time was very quick and I loved the fact that I was able to play with my children. I'm so appreciative of Dr. Ghozland for taking such good care of me. This surgery was one of the best decisions I've made. In One week my energy was back and I felt healthy again both mentally and physically.
